Material Handler

Job Description

A Material Handler is a warehouse or manufacturing professional responsible for the movement, storage, and control of materials and products throughout a facility. Key duties include operating material-handling equipment, managing inventory, and preparing items for shipping or production.

Reports to Supply Manager

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Material handling: Operate equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to move items between storage, production, and shipping areas

  • Inventory management: Use manual or digital systems, such as RF scanners, to track inventory location and perform regular cycle counts to maintain accurate stock records

  • Order fulfillment: Pick, pack, and stage materials for distribution or production, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation

  • Shipping and returns: Prepare finished goods for shipment by crating, packaging, and securing products; process returns and handle necessary documentation

  • Maintain equipment: Perform pre-use inspections and minor repairs on material-handling equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation

  • Uphold safety and cleanliness: Adhere to all safety protocols and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; keep the work area clean, neat, and organized

  • Other duties may also include unloading incoming freight, inspecting deliveries for damage, and verifying that the quality and quantity of items match the purchase order, operating a saw and cutting raw materials

Skills/Training/Qualifications Required

  • Physical stamina: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, as well as lift and move objects, typically up to 25 pounds

  • Attention to detail: Meticulous approach to recording data, verifying accuracy, and locating materials

  • Organizational skills: Strong ability to organize and manage materials efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  • Equipment proficiency: Experience operating a variety of warehouse equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks

  • Basic computer skills: Competency with computer systems to input data and track inventory, with experience in warehouse management systems (WMS) or SAP being a plus

  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills to work within a team and coordinate with supervisors

  • Certifications: Forklift certification is preferred

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of operating a forklift

  • Standing for prolonged periods of time

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. at times
